Gresham Partners

James Graham AM

Chairman, Sydney

James formed the Gresham Partners Group in 1985 and is Chairman of Gresham Partners Limited. 

James holds a Bachelor of Engineering in Chemical Engineering from the University of Sydney and a Master of Business Administration from the University of New South Wales. He is a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering, a Senior Fellow of FINSIA, a Fellow (EngExec) of the Institution of Engineers Australia and a Fellow of Australian Institute of Company Directors. James was previously Managing Director of Rothschild Australia Limited and a Director of Hill Samuel Australia Limited with experience in banking, corporate advice and funds management in Australia and the United Kingdom.

James is Chairman of Coles Group Limited and was a Director of Wesfarmers Limited from 1998 - 2018. In 2001, James was appointed non-executive Deputy Chairman and in 2002 Chairman of Rabobank Australia Limited, responsible for the Bank's operations in Australia and New Zealand. He retired from that position in March 2009. He was also Chairman of the Darling Harbour Authority between 1989 and 1995.

In 2008 James was made a member of the Order of Australia.

Graham Rich

Deputy Chairman, Sydney

Graham is a founder and Deputy Chairman of Gresham Partners Limited.

Graham completed a Bachelor of Commerce (Economics) degree at the University of New South Wales in 1968 and subsequently joined the Reserve Bank of Australia for two years. He has since enjoyed a long and successful career in merchant and investment banking in the UK, Hong Kong and Australia.

Graham joined the Hambros Bank Group in London in 1970 before relocating to Hong Kong to assist in the establishment of Hambro Pacific Limited. In 1976 Graham returned to Australia to assist in the development of Hambro Australia Limited where he became Deputy Managing Director in 1981.

In 1985 Graham left the Hambros Bank Group to be a founding principal of Gresham Partners Limited and has since been involved in the development of all group activities including corporate financial advice, capital markets and specialist funds management. Graham retired from his executive role in 2010 and is currently a Senior Advisor and Deputy Chairman of Gresham Partners Limited and a director of Gresham Partners Holdings Limited. He has also served as a director of a number of listed and unlisted public companies and charitable institutions. 

Charles Graham

Managing Director, Sydney

Charles is Managing Director of Gresham Partners Limited.

Charles has advised Gresham clients across a range of transactions including Platinum Equity on their acquisition of a majority stake in Sensis from Telstra, Bank of Queensland on the acquisition of Investec Bank Australia, Woodside on the partial unwind of the Shell shareholding, Treasury Group on its cross-border merger with Northern Lights Capital, Resimac on the acquisition of RHG’s loan book, DUET on their internalisation of management from AMP and Macquarie and sale to CKI, KKR on the acquisition of Pepper Group, Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan on the asset swap of a stake in Sydney Airport for interests in Brussels and Copenhagen Airports and advising Telstra’s Board on negotiations with the Australian Government and NBN Co.

Prior to joining Gresham, Charles was a Managing Director with Goldman, Sachs & Co. in New York. He had a significant role in transactions for clients including News Corporation, Time Warner, Nielsen, EMC Corporation, Intergraph, Philips, Dow Jones, Warner Music, EqualLogic, CommVault, Knight Ridder, and Affiliated Computer Services. Additionally, he has executed transactions for a range of global financial sponsors, or their portfolio companies, including Bain Capital, Blackstone, Carlyle, Hellman & Friedman, KKR, THLee and TPG Group.

Charles’ transaction experience spans across M&A and financings with a cumulative value of in excess of US$100 billion. Prior to Goldman, Sachs & Co., Charles worked for Rio Tinto at its aluminium operations, Comalco, in engineering and business development roles.

Charles holds Bachelor degrees in Engineering and Commerce from the University of Sydney where he was a Chancellor’s Scholar, a Masters degree in Information Technology from Deakin University, and an MBA from Harvard Business School.

Charles is a Chairman of Musica Viva Australia and a Director of HCA Philanthropy.  He is President of the Harvard Club of Australia, past Chapter Chair of YPO Sydney and a member of the Australian Institute of Company Directors.

Tony Berg AM

Director, Sydney

Tony joined Gresham in 2000 and is a Director of Gresham and Chairman of the Investment Committee of Gresham Property.

Between 1970 and 1972 Tony worked with Loeb Rhoades & Co. in New York, and in 1972 joined Hill Samuel Australia becoming Managing Director in 1984. 

When Hill Samuel became Macquarie Bank in 1985, he was appointed its first Managing Director and CEO.  

In 1994 Tony was appointed Managing Director and CEO of Boral Limited, and retired in February 2000 when the Company was split into two companies: Boral Limited and Origin Energy Limited.

He is also a Director of Kaplan Partners Limited. He was a director of ING Australia Limited and ING Australia Bank, and Chairman of both for some time. Tony is a member of the University of NSW Faculty of Business Advisory Council.

Tony is Chairman of Jawun, Corporate Indigenous Partnerships and a Director of Djarragun College, an indigenous school near Cairns.

Tony has served as a Council Member of The National Gallery of Australia and is a Director of The National Gallery of Australia Foundation Board. He was a director of Musica Viva Australia from 1983-2000, of The Sydney Institute from 1993-97, a Member of the Board of Management of the Australian Graduate School of Management from 1991-98 and 2004-06, and a Member of the Australia Council from 1978-82.

Tony graduated from the University of Sydney with an Honours degree in Economics, and received an MBA with High Distinction from the Harvard Graduate School of Management.

Lauren Magraith

Chief Business Officer & General Counsel, Sydney

Lauren is Chief Business Officer and General Counsel of Gresham Partners Limited.

Prior to joining Gresham, Lauren was a partner in the corporate markets practice of global law firm Baker McKenzie (2015-2019) and has also worked in leading transactional practices at Herbert Smith Freehills (2012-2015) and King & Wood Mallesons (1999-2004).  Lauren has extensive investment banking experience, having held the roles of associate general counsel of J.P. Morgan Chase, and Executive Counsel in J.P. Morgan’s equity capital markets team (2004-2012).  Throughout her career, Lauren has acted on a wide variety of corporate finance, capital markets and public and private M&A transactions for a broad range of domestic and international clients.  Notable transactions include advising Mantra Group on their A$1.2 billion takeover by Accor Hotels, the underwriters of the equity funding component of Qube Holding's A$9 billion takeover bid for Asciano Limited, Emeco Holdings on it’s A$686 million global restructure, recapitalisation and mergers, the underwriters of Link Group’s A$883 million entitlement offer to fund the A$1.5 billion acquisition of Capital Asset Services, the Australian Government on the A$5.679 billion IPO of Medibank Private, and the Commonwealth Bank of Australia on its A$3 billion sale of PERLS VII capital notes as well as its buy-back of PERLS V.

Lauren holds a Bachelor of Arts from Macquarie University, a Bachelor of Laws (Honours Class I) from the University of Sydney and is a member of the Australian Institute of Company Directors.

Chris Stephenson

Chief Financial Officer, Sydney

Chris joined Gresham in 2001 and is a Director and Chief Financial Officer.

Chris is responsible for the finance and administration functions for the Gresham Partners Group and its specialist funds.  Before joining Gresham, Chris had been Head of Finance and Operations for UBS Asset Management (Australia) Ltd.  Previously, Chris had worked with Coopers & Lybrand in both the London and Sydney offices, working with major banking and finance clients.

Chris completed a Bachelor of Science (Honours) in 1985 at Imperial College, London and qualified as a Chartered Accountant in 1989.
